Effortless Posing Tips For Your Engagement Session
Posing is a hot topic in the photography industry. Both for photographers learning to direct poses, and for models learning to work their angles. In the wedding photography arena, I’m going to be generous and say that most couples are not professional models. So, it’s stressful when engagement session day rolls around, and couples realize they haven’t been in front of the camera since their senior photos in 2009!
The best solution for them? A seasoned photographer who has mastered the art of posing. The effortless posing you see in wedding magazines is hardly effortless. It is carefully crafted through experience and expertise.
Posing takes practice and a little bit of trust. The biggest tip I can share is just to keep it fun! Here are three of my tried and true posing cues that are simple and playful for you to try on your next photoshoot!

FollowThe Leader
Find an open area that your couple can safely walk through. Ask them to stand side by side holding hands, perpendicular to the camera. Then ask who ever is standing furthest away from the camera to lovingly lead their partner across the frame “as if they had a surprise to show them.”
This is my ultimate favorite cue. It combines movement with connection between the couple, and almost always leads to natural smiles and laughter.
The Ring Flip
Have your couple face each other heart to heart, with bride’s ring hand AWAY from the camera. Then have her sweep her hand across her body and flip her palm toward the groom’s cheek so her ring is now facing the camera. This is creating a more feminine shape with her hand. Make sure they cozy close together, and violá!
This pose will give you that high fashion feel that some of your clients may be looking for. It’s still, it’s intimate, and it totally works.
The Peek Back
Set the couple up in front of you, facing away from the camera. Have them hold hands, or for an extra touch have your groom hold the bride’s dress. Then instruct them to walk away from the camera and flirt with each other while they do so. After a few steps, call the bride’s name so she looks back at you, and I promise you wont be disappointed.
This pose works for both engagement sessions and on the wedding day. This is such a flattering angle for the ladies. Something about that over the shoulder look gets me every time!
Bonus!The Sneak Attack
Face the bride toward the camera, and place groom five feet behind her so you can see him over her shoulder. Then direct the groom to “sneak up” on her for a flirty little bear hug.
This pose is great for your more playful couples who like the candid moments best.
