What To Wear To Your Engagement Session
I get it… being in front of the camera is nerve-wracking! Not to mention that ever-stressful question - What the heck do I WEAR!?”
Rest easy friends because today I’ll be sharing everything I’ve learned about looking flawless for the camera…
1. Be you
Are you outdoorsy? Wear your favorite boots. Are you city chic? Bust out that pleated skirt and leather jacket. But most importantly choose an outfit that you love and that fits you in all the right places so you feel confident, yourself, and full of swagger!
2. Two outfits are better than one
I love bringing two looks to play with for engagement photoshoots. First… keep it casual. Think white tee, boyfriend jeans, and your favorite floppy hat. For him how about a short sleeve button up shirt, some Levi jeans, and Vans. Second… dress to impress! Slip into that sexy bodycon gown paired with pumps and a leather jacket. Style him up in some cognac leather boots, a sport coat and his favorite skinny tie.
3. Show your true colors
When choosing colors, focus on a complimentary palette you like and build outfits around those tones. You don’t want to be too “matchy matchy”… but you do want to compliment one another. I always say treat it like you’re creating one outfit worn by two people. For example: Perhaps you’re planning a spring wedding, so a nice mauve, navy, and white palette is catching your eye. So play with some of those colors and watch your palette come to life!
4. The Devil’s in the details
Get your nails freshly painted, visit the barber for a fresh fade, polish your shoes, iron your shirts, lint roll that dog hair off your jacket… I’m telling you the attention to detail will make all the difference. Don’t rely on (or pay for) photoshop to fix things you could fix at home!
5. Be like an onion and - layer!
Always dress in layers. Jackets, scarves, cardigans, and vests are great layering pieces. Then simply ditch a layer and change your look without changing your whole outfit!
6. Avoid these at all costs
Large logos, graphic T’s, stripes, plaid or checkered shirts, loud patterns, and wardrobe pieces that you will be fidgeting with the whole time.
Stick with solid earthy colors, subtle floral patterns, and something that fits you flawlessly for a refined and elegant finish.
7. Tips for him
Think of your man as the solid, organic base of the outfit. Khaki pants or dark jeans, solid grey or cream sweaters, a light blue button up paired with a navy vest… things like that. While you, my dear, are the feminine flair to accent his foundation. A floral dress or blouse, a colorful accessory piece and a little bit of tasteful skin to create a glowing sense of balance.
8. Tips for her
Speaking of femininity, an engagement photoshoot is a great opportunity to do the hair + makeup trial with the beauty crew you’ve hired for the wedding day. Makeup done by the hand of a professional wins every time, and even though you may feel a bit more glam than your usual, that little “extra” will polish your photos and leave you with that editorial look!
